What children learn in Class 1 maths

Counting and numbers up to 100

Counting objects one by one, reading and writing numbers, comparing which group has more, and understanding that 10 ones make a ten. Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s starts here too.

Practise it here: Skip counting and place value · Memory Dash · Conquer the World

Addition within 20

Joining two groups and counting all, then moving to number sentences such as 7 + 5. Bonds of 10 (6 + 4, 3 + 7) make everything later easier.

Practise it here: Addition · Time Skip · Conquer the World · Classroom

Subtraction within 20

Taking away, finding the difference and counting back. Children link each subtraction to its addition partner.

Practise it here: Subtraction · Time Skip · Conquer the World · Classroom

Shapes and patterns

Recognising circles, squares, triangles and rectangles around the house, spotting repeating patterns and continuing them.

Practise it here: Geometry · Rangoli Squares · Kolam Trace

Money and measurement

Naming ₹1, ₹2, ₹5 and ₹10 coins, comparing long and short, heavy and light, and reading the days of the week.

Practise it here: Word problems · Shop Street

Time and data

Morning, afternoon and night, the days of the week and simple pictures that show how many of something there are.

Practise it here: Logic puzzles · Smart Games · Nonogram

Tips for parents of Class 1 children

  • Use real objects. Counting spoons, stairs or chapatis teaches more than a page of sums, and five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
  • Practise number bonds of 10 until they are instant (1 + 9, 2 + 8 and so on). Almost every later addition and subtraction strategy rests on them.
  • Let your child run a small shop at home with ₹1, ₹2 and ₹5 coins. Handling money makes numbers feel useful.
  • Praise effort and ask how they got the answer. Explaining, even with fingers, is how six-year-olds build understanding.
