Class 4 maths: games and practice for ages 8–9

In Class 4 the numbers get bigger and the ideas get more abstract. Children multiply and divide beyond tables, meet fractions properly, measure perimeter and learn to read data. This page covers topics from the NCERT Class 4 maths syllabus such as numbers up to 5 digits, the four operations, fractions and their comparison, perimeter, time on 12-hour and 24-hour clocks, money, weight, volume, patterns and data handling. Every topic is paired with the Maths Guru games that practise it. Maths Guru is an independent practice tool and is not endorsed by NCERT.

Tips for parents of Class 4 children

  • Check that tables up to 10 are truly automatic before the year gets going. Slow tables make long multiplication and long division painful.
  • Show fractions with real food: fold a roti into quarters, cut a chikki into eighths. A fraction is a picture before it is a rule.
  • Teach estimation first. Rounding 4,872 + 3,129 to about 5,000 + 3,000 tells your child roughly what the answer must be.
  • Keep a weekly twenty-minute family maths slot with a worksheet and one game. Regularity matters more than length.
