Nonogram: reveal the picture with number clues

Nonogram, also known as picross, is a picture logic puzzle. Numbers beside each row and above each column say how long each coloured run is, in order, and the player fills in the cells that must be part of the picture. It is logic and counting at once.

How to play

  1. Read the clues. Numbers above each column and beside each row give the length of each coloured run, in order. A 3 in orange means three orange cells in a row.
  2. Two runs of the same colour need at least one blank between them. Runs of different colours may touch.
  3. Fill the cells you are sure about. Use the X tool to mark cells you have ruled out; it is only a memory aid.
  4. You get 3 checks. Check highlights correct cells in green and wrong ones in red.
  5. Beat the par time for a higher score. Par is 90 seconds for easy, 240 for medium and 540 for hard.

Maths skills it builds

  • Counting and run lengths
  • Elimination
  • Patience

Why it works

Nonograms turn counting into a logic puzzle: each clue limits where cells can be, and children combine clues across rows and columns to pin down the picture. The reward is a picture appearing, which keeps younger solvers going. Coloured clues in larger grids add a gentle extra layer.

What sizes are there?

5×5 with 1–2 colours for Beginner, 7×7 with 2–3 colours for Explorer and 10×10 with 3–5 colours for Champion.

What does the X tool do?

It marks cells you have ruled out as a memory aid. Tap the same cell again with the X tool to clear it.

Is there a time limit?

No limit. A timer counts up and your score includes a time bonus for beating par, but slow solves still score.

Can guests play?

Yes. Guests can play the Beginner level. Signing up unlocks Explorer and Champion.
