KenKen: the arithmetic grid puzzle for kids
KenKen is a number puzzle that mixes Sudoku-style logic with real arithmetic. Children fill a grid so that every row and column contains each number exactly once, then make the numbers inside each outlined cage hit its target using the operation shown. Maths Guru offers it in 3×3, 4×4 and 5×5 sizes.

How to play
- Fill the grid so every row and every column contains each number exactly once. A 3×3 grid uses 1, 2 and 3.
- Each outlined cage has a target number and an operation (+, −, × or ÷). The numbers inside the cage must reach the target using that operation.
- Start with single-cell cages, which give you the value directly.
- Use − and ÷ cages next, since they have fewer valid pairs, then work out the rest by elimination.
- You get 3 Check attempts, so fill the whole grid before checking.
Maths skills it builds
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Number facts and factors
- Logical deduction
- Elimination
Why it works
KenKen makes children use all four operations in a purposeful way, because cage targets only work if they know their number facts and factors. At the same time the row and column rule trains the elimination logic of Sudoku. The 3×3 version is an easy way in, and 5×5 is a real test.
